بسمہ اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

Following are my notes, which I made from the lectures of Dr. Israr Ahem and Sister Taymiyah Zubair. May Allah Subahna Talla forgive me if I made any mistake while doing this tafseer (intensely or un- intensely) and give reward to them (Ameen).

Uzma Jafri

بسمہ اللہ الرحمن الرحیم

Surah Al-Imran

Verse 92: You will never attain the righteousness until you spend from what you love and whatever you spend from anything then, indeed Allah knows all of it.

[To love, respect and take care of others is the biggest deed in all kinds of good deeds. And to spend your wealth in the care of other human is the best deed out any other deed]

Verse 93: All the food was lawful for the children of Israil except, what Yaqoob (AS) made upon himself (he did not like camel meet), before the Taurat was revealed; say (Muhammad PBUH); “if you are truthful (Joes and Christians), read and recite it with the Taurat.

[Camel meet was unlawful in the Joes shriah, but Islam made it lawful. Joes asked to Muhammad (PBUH) why it is like that when all the Islamic shariah is same as Joe’s shariah. Muhammad (PBUH) replied that camel meet was not unlawful in the Taurat it was the personal choice of Yaqoob (AS) and if anyone wants to check this, he is free to check this from the Taurat.]

Verse 94: Then whoever fabricates the lie upon Allah after that; (after knowing that camel meet is lawful) then those are the wrong doers.

Verse 95: Say (Muhammad PBUH) Allah has spoken the truth, and then follows the religion of Ibrahim, who was the upright; and he was not from the polytheists.

Verse 96: Indeed the first House set up for the mankind is the one which is at Makah; a guidance and Blessing for the world. Verse 97:  There are clear signs in it; standing place of Ibrahim (AS); and whoever enter it, become safe; and Hajj of the House of Allah is upon the mankind, and it is only for Allah; the one who is able to do it, find a way; and whoever disbelieve (A person do not perform Hajj even he has wealth and all the convenience), then Allah is Free from the needs of the worlds.

Verse 98: Say (Muhammad PBUH); O people! of the Book why do you disbelieve in the signs of Allah? and Allah is a witness upon what you all do.

Verse 99: Say (Muhammad PBUH); O people! Of the Book, why do you hider those who believed from the way of Allah? You are seeking to make crooked in it, while you are witnesses; and Allah does not unaware of what you all do.

Verse 100: O you! Who believed, if you obey a group from those who were given the Book; then they will turn back you from your belief, as disbelievers.

Verse 101: How could you disbelieve? While the verses of Allah is recited upon you; and His Messenger (PBUH) is among you; and whoever holds firmly to Allah then, surly he is guided to a straight path.

Verse 102: O you! Those who believe fear Allah, as His right that He should be feared, and don’t die except while you are the ones who Muslim.

Tafseer: Allah SWT gives three important points to do a Muslim Uma. These points start from verse 102-104.

1st Point: Reform every individual, before start working on any project you have to work on every individual’s character (Especially in Dawah)]. This is a very strong Aya from the Quran for instructing Muslims to adopt Taqwa. When this aya was revealed the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) became so worried and they asked “O Muhammad PBUH! Who can fear Allah, as His right”. Muhammad PBUH replied “adopt Taqwa how much maximum you can (Surah Tagabun)” and plus “don’t die except you are obedient of Allah SWT”

Lesson: How can we adopt taqwa in our daily life?  Do Astugfar with Ikhlas, respect others, give more sadaqat from the things that we like more, less spend time on the internet, TV and phone, don’t lie, sleep early and wake up early, encourage our kids to pray on time and help others, pray with the concentration and always stay away from sreek-e-asghar (which is do good deed for fame only). We got this lesson from Surah Baqarah Verse 271: [if you disclose the charities then it is well but, if you keep it secret what you give to the poor then it is better for you] [Remember whenever we do Farz Ibaat, Sunna and Wajebat (i.e. salat, fast, Zakat, Hajj, beard, pray salt in Mosque (for guys especially) etc.) it is necessary or batter to do it publicly, (Shaitaan put a thought in our heart do not go to mosque for prayers may be others think that you are showing off ) but when we do Nafli Ibadat (i.e Nafil salat, sadaqt , kherat etc) it is necessary to do them secretly (it will be a big test if you do those openly), stay away from suood especially from compound interest.

Verse 103:  And hold the rope of Allah (the Quran) all together and do not be divided, and remember Allah Favoured you, when you were enemies, then Allah made friendship between you’re hearts then you became brothers by His favour and you were on the edge of the pit / depths from the fire, then He saved you from it (from putting the love into their hearts for each other’s); like that Allah makes clear His verse for you so that you may be guided. [ before accepting Islam the Ansar-e-Medina were enemies of each other especially, Qoos and Kizrij  اوس اور خزرج. Ansar-e-Medina (including Qoos and Kizrij (اوس اور خزرج) ) accepted the Islam, after Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions migrated from Makah to Medina  ]

2nd Point: Establish unity in the Muslim Uma or groups who are working for Allah’s Deen. To put humans in the same path you have to make the same kind of brains. Their thoughts, views and aims must have to be the same (they all must have taqwa). You can do it, when you hold the rope of Allah. The rope of Allah is the Quran. Hazrat Abdullah Ibn-e-Massod (RA) narrated that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said “The rope of Allah is very strong and straight from between the sky and the earth”. Another saying is “make happiness with the Quran that is attached to Allah SWT”. The Quran is the one that makes all good characteristics to the individual and in the gathering.

Verse 104:  And let there be among you a group of people who inviting to the good and enjoining the right and for bidding from the wrong and those are the ones who are successful.

[The Muslim community has to do five things 1- invite towards good deeds (any deed with regard to the world or the hereafter and deed must not contradicting from Islam  2- enjoining or ordering the right (everything which is recognize or accepted by the Islamic sharia, and to call people to the general good deed.  To invite individual toward the good deed i.e. call for the prayer, stop someone from wasting time, money and resources etc., encourage someone to make their notes while listening the lectures etc.)  3- Forbidding from the wrong. These rules apply on all of us (verse 104) 4- Do not be divided 5- remember the favour of Allah (verse 103).]

3rd Point: Muslims have to have a group of Muslims that are responsible to stop the evils and the bad deeds, this is called “Wake up and wake the others up”. Whenever you see a bad deed then you have to stop it with your hand and if you don’t have the courage of using your hands then you have to say something against the bad deeds, if you can’t say anything then you have to feel bad about the bad deeds in your heart and this is the last stage of your Eman. You have to follow these instructions step by step. This means if you hate the evil deeds then build courage to say something against it; start building up your powers along with saying against it, when you have power then imposed the Islamic method or values or law by force.

ھم تو جیتٰے ھیں کہ تیرا نام رھے      کہیں ممکن ہے کہ ساقی نہ رہے جام رہے

Verse 105: And do not be like those who became divided and differed from after came to them the clear proofs; and those for them is a great punishment.

[To save ourselves from division or discrimination, we have to have 5 important things in our characters. 1- Knowledge   2- Memory 3- Comprehension / Ability   4- Faith   5- Action]

Verse 106: On the day some faces would become white and some faces black; As for those whose their faces turn black, it will ask to them, “did you disbelieve after your belief? Then taste, the punishment for what you all used to disbeliefs”

Verse 107: But as for those who, their faces turn white; then they will be in the Mercy of Allah, they will be abide forever in it.

Verse 108: These are the verses of Allah We recite them to you (Muhammad PBUH) with truth; Allah does not want injustice to the world. [ to hide the truth is injustice, do not give someone his right is injustice]

Verse 109: And belongs to Allah whatever in the heavens and in the earth; and all the matters will be returns towards Allah (SWT).

Verse 110: You are (all Muslims) the best community or a group of people raised for the mankind (because), you enjoining order with the right and forbidding from the wrong and you believe with Allah; and if the people of the Book believed, it would surely have been a good for them; some of them are believers among them, but most of them are defiantly dis-obedient.

Verse 111: They will never harm you except a hurt (talking about disbeliever that they will never harm the Muslims except mental and physical torcher); if they fight with you then they will turn the backs towards you; then they will not be helped.

Verse 112: The humiliation struck on them, wherever they are founded; except with a rope of Allah; and with a rope of Allah from the people and they earned anger from Allah, and the poverty struck on them; that is because they used to disbelieved with the verse of Allah and they killed the Prophets without any reason; that is because they disobeyed and they were used to transgress.

Verse 113: They are not the same, among the people of the Books, there are a group of people standing and recite the verse of Allah in the hours of the night and they prostrate. Verse 114: They believe in Allah and the Day the Last, and they enjoin / order with the right, forbid from the wrong and they rush in the good deeds; and those the righteous. Verse 115: And whatever they do from a good, then never will they be denied it (Allah SWT will recognize their deeds and gives them rewards)

Verse 116: Indeed those who disbelieved never will avail anything from their wealth and children against Allah; and those are the companion of the fire; they will abide forever in it.

Verse 117: Example of the ones who spend in this world’s life (only for showing off), is like the example of a frost wind, it struck to the people’s harvest, who did wronged themselves, then the frost wind destroy the harvest / field; and Allah did not wronged them but, they wronged themselves.

Verse 118: O you who Believed! Do not take as intimates friend from other than yourselves, they (the disbelievers) will not spare you in any ruin / loss; they wish (the disbelievers) to distresses you; indeed has become apparent the hatred from their mouths and what is hidden in their chests; it is great (it is a great oppression for the believers). [This verse is for those believers who have friends from disbelievers since then when they were disbelievers and, they were still friends. Believers share their secrets with their disbeliever friends, because of their innocent]

Verse 119: O you are those, who love them but they do not love you, and you believe with all of the Books; and when they (disbelievers) meet you (to Muslim friends), they say “we believe!” And when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you, out of their rage / anger; Indeed Allah knows what is in the chests.

Verse 120: If touches you (to Muslims) any good, it grieves them (to disbelievers), and if strikes misfortune to you, they rejoice with it; and if you (Muslims) are patient and have fear of Allah then anything will not harm you from their plot (from disbelievers); indeed Allah is All- Encompassing, (what) they (disbelievers) do.

History: The Battle of Uhud ( غزوة أحد‎ Ġazwat ‘Uḥud) was fought on March 19, 625 (3 Shawwal 3 AH) at the valley in front of Mount Uhud ( now north western of Arabia). Surah Infaal describes the victory of the battle Badar. In the battle Badar there were only 313 Muslims against a 1000 disbelievers. 70 great leaders of the non-believers were killed by Muslims. Abu Jehal was one of the greatest enemies of Muslims and he was also killed in this battle. Disbelievers from Makah were very angry and wanted to take revenge of their loss. They did full preparation of the war and after a year they came for another fight with Prophet Muhammad PBUH and his followers. They had 3000 soldiers and their commander was Abu Sufean. Since the winning army attains full right of the losing army’s women and children, the non-believer brought their females with them as a source of encouragement to fight better. Abu Sufean came with his wife Hinda who lost her father and brother in the battle Bader. Because of that, she was very angry. She ate Hazart Hamaz’s (RA) liver after he was killed by disbelievers. Abu Sufean and Hinda eventually accepted Islam.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH wanted to fight in only the Medina but, the people who accepted Islam after battle Badar were found of fighting. They encouraged the Prophet PBUH to fight in the open ground. Muhammad PBUH agreed with them and gave the orders for fighting with the attackers in the open ground. Abdullah Ibn e Ubai wanted to fight in the Medina, he did not want to fight in the open ground so, and he got angry and backed out from the fight taking his army of 300 soldiers with him. Only 700 Muslim soldiers remained at this time. Bano Harsa and Bano Salma were 2 families who felt that they couldn’t fight against the huge force of the disbelievers, but after a few moments they became firm with their faith in Allah and participated. Allah SWT promised to help the Muslims in battle (which He did) and Muslims won again but…

Prophet Muhammad PBUH placed 50 soldiers at one of the door of the Mount Uhud. He PBUH ordered them to stay put at their places because the enemies could attack from there and easily get there victory.  Even if the soldiers witnessed the Muslims being slayed and vultures and crows feeding on their body, they were not allowed to move.

When the Muslims won, the disbelievers began to travel home. When the Muslim soldiers at the door found out the battle was won; they were starting to dispute on keeping guard for the door of Mount Uhud. They thought that the command for guarding the door was conditional and only valid if the Muslims lost. It has been said that since many did not want to lose the opportunity of collecting left overs of the disbelievers and left. 35 Muslim soldiers left from guarding the door and 15 Muslim soldiers stayed. Khalid bin Waleed was a soldier of the disbelievers when he saw the spot was unguarded, he attacked with his 100 soldiers and turn the table down against the Muslim and won the battle. Abu Sufean was with him, Khalid bin Waleed wanted to go up to Mount Uhud but, Allah SWT put fear into Abu Sufean’s heart. He feared that if they went up Mount Uhud, Muslims will throw the stones, killing their soldiers and so he commanded to go back home. The victory of Muslims turns into defeat.

In this battle Muslims made few mistakes that caused their defeat. Allah SWT pointed out these mistakes in the Quran; especially when Prophet Muhammad PBUH got hurt (he (PBUH) had been attacked on his cheek bone with the sword and his (PBUH) two teeth had Shaheed, and he also bled so much that he was on the verge of fainting) . He said “How can Allah guide a nation who painted his Prophet’s face with the blood?” but this time, Allah SWT did not accepted His (PBUH) dua because…

This is all about time… Before in Makah when people stoned the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, an Angel came to Muhammad PBUH and asked, “If you ordered me I will make the Mountains together so, they all kill in between the Mountains”. Muhammad PBUH replied, “No, maybe Allah SWT will guide their progeny” but, later when Prophet Muhammad said “How can Allah guide a nation who painted his Prophet’s face with the blood?”; Allah SWT prohibited him to say that. After few years Khalid bin Waleed accepted Islam and he was a hero of Islam. Muhammad PBUH said, “Khalid is the sword of Islam!” (That was the reason behind forbidding Muhammad PBUH from saying any bad word for the disbelievers at that moment. And also it is).

Allah SWT wanted Muslims to learn discipline, to always have pure intensions, and follow the order of their commander.

Verse 121: And when you left from your family early in the morning, you were arranging the believers to take position for the battle; and Allah is All Hearing and All Knowing.

[what did she say right before “A person needs for his feet to be firm in the face of shubuhaat.”…

I think the second point is the one I mentioned above. the one she mentioned now is: A person needs for his feet to be firm and stable in the face of shahawaat: desires]

Verse 122: When inclined / motivated 2 parties among you lost heart, but Allah was protector of both; let, the believers put their trust on Allah.

Verse 123: And certainly Allah helped you in Badar while you were weak; so, fear Allah so, that you may be grateful.

Verse 124: When you said to the believers “is it not enough for you that your Lord reinforce you with 3000 Angels, the ones sent down?”

Verse 125: Yes! If you are patient and fear Allah, and they come of suddenly upon you, your Lord will help you with 5000 Angels, the ones having marks. Verse 126: Allah does not made it except as good news for you, and to reassure your hearts with it; there is no victory except from near Allah, the All Mighty, The All Wise.

Verse 127: That they may cut off a group of those who disbelieved or suppress them so, that they turn back as disappointed.

Verse 128: It is not for you the decision of anything weather He turns or Punishes or to them so, for indeed you are wrongdoers.

Verse 129: For Allah whatever in the Heavens and the earth; He forgive to whom He will and punish to whom He wills; and Allah is All-Forgiving Most-Merciful.

Verse 130: O you those who! Believe do not consume the usury / interest double multiplied (compound interest: invest money or assets and safe capital amount and consume profit) ; and fear Allah so, you may be successful. Verse 131: And fear the fire which is prepared for the non-believers.

Verse 132: And obey Allah and the Messengers so, that they may you receive Mercy.

Verse 1333: And hasten to forgiveness your Lord and a Garden, its width is the like the heavens and the earth; prepared for the pious.

Verse 134: Those who they spend in the ease and in the hardship and those who restrain the anger and those who pardon from the people; and Allah loves the good doers.

Verse 135: And those when they did immorality or wronged themselves they remember Allah then ask forgiveness for their sins and who can forgive the sins except Allah; and not they persist on what they did, while they know.

Verse 136: Those their reward is forgiveness and Gardens from their Lord, the rivers flow from underneath them; abide forever in it, and how well the reward for the righteous workers.

Verse 137: Verily passed before you many situation / ways then, travel in the earth and see, how was the end of the deniers (Remember the nation of Aad and Samod).

Verse 138: This is declaration for the people and guidance and admonition / advise for the God- Fearing.

Verse 139: And don’t weaken and grieve (from the loss of Badar) while you are the superior, if you are believer. (Now a days we are humiliate because lake of Eman)

Verse 140: If touched you any internal wound so, certainly the people / enemy has touched the same kind of wound (70 great leaders were killed by Muslims in the battle Uhad ); and these are the days We alternate them among the people;  so, that Allah makes evidence to those who believe, and take martyrs / witness; and Allah does not loves the wrong doers.

Verse 141: So, that Allah may purify to those who believe and destroy the non-believers.  (the eman of Ansar-e-Medina were weak and it became stronger with this test, and everyone came to know who is Munafiq i.e. Abdullah bin Ubai)

Verse 142: Or do you think that you enter the paradise while Allah has not made evident to those who strove hard among you and He made evident the ones who are patient.

Verse 143: and certainly you used to wish the death before that you met it (they died or observe and suffer from the situation of death very closely in battle Uhad) then indeed while you were looking on.

Verse 144: And Muhammad (PBUH) is not except a Messenger, certainly the other Messengers passed away before him; so, if he died or killed, will you turn back on your heels? And whoever turn back on his heels then, he will never harm Allah in anything; and Allah will reward the grateful ones soon! (Mugaheedin-e-battale Uhad were lost their hearts when they heard a rumour that Muhammad (PBUH) war killed. Even Hazart Umar R.A. through his sword away)

Verse 145: And it is not for a soul that he dies except by the permission of Allah; at a decree determined ( before the time of death, which is written in the looh-e-mehfooz); and whoever desire reword of the world, We will give it to him from it; and whoever desire the Hereafter, We will give to him from it; and We will reward the grateful ones soon.

Verse 146: And how many from a prophet fought with many religious scholars; so, not they lost heart for what befell them in the way of Allah and they do not weaken and gave in; and Allah Loves the patient ones.

Verse 147: And their words were not except that they said “Our Lord forgive our sins for us and our excesses in our affairs and make firm our feet and give us victory against the non-believer people!” (Ameen)

Verse 148: So, Allah gave them reward of the world and it is a good reward in the Hereafter; and Allah loves the good-doers.

Verse 149:  O you those who believe!  If you (willingly) obey to those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your hells, and then you will turn back as losers.

Verse 150:  Nay Allah is your protector and He is the best of the Helper.

Verse 151: Soon We will cast of extreme fear in the hearts, to those who disbelieve because they associated partners with Allah, what not He has not sent any authority down about it; and their adobe will be the fire and how wretched adobe of the wrong-doers.

Verse 152: And certainly Allah fulfilled  His promise, when you were killing them by His permission (when Ansar-e-Medina were fighting with Musrkeen-e-Makkah); until you lost courage and you fell in to dispute concerning the order and you disobeyed after He had showed you what love (the victory and the left-over or Shaba ) there are some among you who desire the world and some who desire the Hereafter; then He diverted you from them (Allah separated good ones from the bad doers) so, that He may test you; and surly He forgive you; and Allah is the possessor of Bounty for the believers.

(Prophet Muhammad PBUH placed 50 soldiers at one of the door of the Mount Uhud.

The victory of Muslims turns into defeat.)

Verse 153: When you were running uphill and do not casting a glance/ look behind on any one, while the Messenger was calling you from behind you (when Muslim soldiers were leaving their spot); so, He repaid you distress with distress so, that you not grieve over what escaped on you and what had befallen on you; and Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

[Distress: Prophet Muhammad PBUH got hurt (he (PBUH) had been attacked on his cheek bone with the sword and his (PBUH) two teeth had Shaheed, and he also bled so much that he was on the verge of fainting) . He said “How can Allah guide a nation who painted his Prophet’s face with the blood? And so many Sahaba R.A. and Hazrat Hamza R.A. were got shahadat]

Verse 154: Then He sent down a security upon you after the distress, a slumber that overcome a group from you (on believers), while a group certainly worried about themselves, they were thinking other than the truth about Allah, like the thought of the ignorance ( the soldiers were worried about to save their lives and forget that Allah promised for their help. They lost their faith in Allah (SWT)); They were saying :Is for us anything from the matter (Abdullah Ibn e Ubai wanted to fight in the Medina, he did not want to fight in the open ground so, and he got angry and backed out from the fight taking his army of 300 soldiers with him. He said when you guy do not respect out suggestion so why we fight); Say indeed (Muhammad PBUH) the matters, all of it is for Allah (SWT); they were hiding what not revealing in themselves to you (Muhammad PBUH);  They were saying “If it was for us anything from the matters, we would have not been killed here; say (Muhammad PBUH) to those who the death was decreed upon them, if you were in your houses, surely would have come out towards your place of death; and that Allah might test what in your chests /hearts  and that He may purify what in your hearts; and Allah is All- Aware of what in you chests.

Verse 155: Indeed those who turned back among you on the day when the 2 hosts met in front of each other; Indeed the Shaitaan made them slip for some of what they had earned, and surely Allah forgave on them; Indeed Allah is Oft-Forgiving, All Forbearing.

Verse 156: O you who believe! Do not be like those who disbelieved, when they walked in the earth or they were fighting, they said about their brothers that if they had been with us would have not been died or killed; so, Allah makes a regret in their hearts and Allah fives life and cause to death; and Allah is All Seer of what you all do.

Verse 157: And surly if you are killed or died in the way of Allah then certainly there is a forgiveness and Mercy from Allah, those are better than what they accumulate.

Verse 158: And if you were die or killed, then surly you will be gathered towards Allah (SWT).

Verse 159: So, because of Mercy of Allah (SWT) you dealt gently for them (the ones who did not fought and turned back from the Battle Uhad); and if you had rude and harsh, surly they would have dispersed around you; then pardon from them and ask forgivness and consult them in the matters; when you have decided then put trust on Allah (SWT); Indeed Allah loves the ones who put trust in him.

Verse 160 if Allah helps you then no one can overcome you, and if He forsakes you then who is the one who can help after Him? And let the believers put their trust on Allah (SWT).

Verse 161: And it is not for a Prophet that He defrauds / cheats; and whoever defrauds, he will bring with what he defrauded on the Day of Resurrection; then every soul will repaid in ful what he has earned and they will not be wronged.

[The non-believers accused to Muhammad (PBUH), that he defrauds or cheats. They said that Muhammad (PBUH) wants to establish his government that is why he is using their strength. And in the answer of those accuses, Allah (SWT) sent down the above mentions verse.]

Verse 162: Is the one who pursues the Pleasure of Allah can be like the one who draws /settle with wrath/ rage / anger from Allah 9SWT), and his destination is the Hell and it is a wretched destination (and how wretched is the destination!).

Verse 163:  They are varying in degree near Allah; and Allah is All-Seer with what they / people do.

Verse 164: Certainly Allah bestowed a favour on the believers, when He raised a Messenger in among them, he (PBUH) recites HIS verse and purifies them and teaches them the BOOK and the Wisdom; although they were before that certainly in the clear error. (Half Juzz)

[Where purify means to take bad deeds out of you heart and then put new, clean and good deed in it.]

Verse 165:  When struck any distress to disbelievers, surly you had already struck them twice of it; you said from where it comes (the believers said about the distress “why Allah did not help us, if HE does before”); say (Muhammad PBUH) it is from near yourselves; indeed everything is on Allah (SWT), He is All Powerful.
